Family Outgrowing Your Home? Here Are Three Ways To Add More Space

With a growing family, space is at a premium. Even tiny babies take up vast amounts of space with everything they need, so making the most of the space you have really is the only way to avoid upsizing. For many families, upsizing just isn’t an option - maybe they don’t want to leave the home they have, the area they’re in, or they just don’t want to spend that kind of money. But there are options for optimizing the home you have, which are perfect for growing families.

  1. Conversion
If you have a disused loft space, garage, or basement, these areas are perfect for converting into a space which is more suitable for family use. A loft conversion makes a great extra bedroom for kids once they’re older, and they tend to add extra storage under the eaves, which is perfect for a family with a growing collection of everything.

A garage can make a perfect new room if it is conjoined to the house, even if it’s not one which is necessarily for relaxing in. A laundry room, storage space, and even an extra bathroom are all possible for a garage conversion, freeing up a lot of space in the rest of the home.

2. Extention
If you’ve got more outdoor space than inside, it could be worth extending into it. Many people choose to add a conservatory to the back of their home to give them an extra room for relaxation and family time. The most important thing to remember is to go for a conservatory which can regulate temperature well - there’s no point creating an extra room which is too hot or cold to spend any time in. Installing a roof which can regulate temperature such as the Guardian conservatory roof can make a world of difference. Other people choose to extend both top and bottom floor of their home, making a larger living space and even adding in a new bedroom. It’s still cheaper than upsizing to a larger home, and can increase the value of the property significantly if you reckon you’ll be selling up a few years down the line.

3. Make the most of what you have
Many of our homes are full of little nooks and crannies which aren’t properly utilised. Maybe they’re in an odd place, or just a bit dingy, or maybe you just can’t decide what to do with it. The easiest option is to turn these odd little disused bits of space into storage - a few shelves or a cupboard door should do the trick.

Otherwise, try tackling their problem. If it’s dingy, add a desk and a lamp, and you’ve got yourself a great little homework station. If it’s just in an odd place, get imaginative. And remember that there still has to be room for beauty, even in a home that’s bursting at the seams, so a small table with some pretty houseplants in a disused space can add an element of homeliness that you might not have previously considered.

Upsizing to a larger home should be the final option - until that point, there are loads of ways to add space, or make the most of the space you have for your growing family.
