Shabby Chic: A Look To Match The Chaos Of Kids

Books, Shabby Chic, Lavender, Flags And Pennants

A lot of parents find themselves struggling when they’re trying to decorate rooms to match the destructive tendencies of their kids. Of course, most children don’t go around breaking things for the sake of it. But, when you have little ones at home, you are always at risk of accidents. Because of this risk, it often feels pointless to put effort into your design. Beautiful rooms will quickly be ruined if you’re not careful. But, it doesn’t have to be this way. Instead, you just need to choose a style which matches your kid’s energy. To help you out with this, this post will be going through a style which has lost some popularity over the last few years. But, can still provide you with everything you need.

The style this post will be focusing on is shabby chic. But, why exactly is this style good, in the first place? The shabby look is formed by gathering items which have been deliberately distressed to look older. With the right pieces, this sort of look can transform a room to make it look like a rustic and homely space, without costing anything at all. Because the items in the room are already designed to look well-used, there is much less your kids can do to ruin them. And, this is perfect when trying to make a space child-proof.

When building a style like this, it’s good to start with the furniture you’re going to use. This sort of look can be achieved very easily. So, the furniture you look for doesn’t need to match the style. But, it does need to be made from solid, bare wood. Items like this can often be found second-hand, making them much cheaper. Along with being easier on the wallet, items like this will be easier on your stress levels, too. Once you’ve painted the tops of your tables and chairs, they will look great. But, they won’t have been a huge investment of time or money. Along with this, a distressed Chesterfield sofa or similar item could be perfect as your main pieces. But, you may also want some different styles to compliment it. Distressed is the name of the game with this style. So, using sandpaper to finish everything off is highly recommended.

Next, it’s time to consider the walls and floors in a room like this. In most cases, people will go for wooden floors in this sort of space. A lot of houses already have flooring like this, even if it’s under the carpets. So, it’s easy to have them exposed and restored to look great. With your wooden floors, some neutral colours on the walls with some distressed wallpaper could be perfect. You have a lot of freedom when it comes to the walls, here. But, make sure you use options which are waterproof, to make them easier to clean. Having wooden floors and easily cleanable walls is an excellent way to childproof these areas.

Hopefully, this post will inspire you to dive head first into a style like this. In most cases, kids won’t be holding back your dreams of a stylish home. Instead, it will be a matter of your ambition ruining it for you.
