How To Stay Happy And Sane As A Stay-At-Home Mum

Whether you chose to be a stay at home mum or circumstances made it the only logical option, adjusting to the routine and responsibilities you have to face can really wear you down. You need to juggle a number of different tasks, keep your children occupied and entertained, and also make sure that you stay happy and healthy. From the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep you have something you need to do, and all of this work can start to take its toll. Being a stay at home mum is an amazing privilege, but, with these tips, you can make it a little easier.

1. Make Peace With The Mess
You might be at home most of the day, but don’t think this means your house will sparkle. In fact, it will probably be messier than ever before. Of course, you shouldn’t let the dishes pile high, and your kids roll around in mud, but also shouldn’t spend your time stressing about a bit of Lego on the floor or handprints on the windows. The moment you decide to clean one room, your kids are going to make two more messy, so you may as well make peace with that.

2. Get Out Of The House
Taking small children out can be an absolute nightmare, but that doesn’t mean you should shut yourself off from the outside world and spend your days watching the Disney channel with your kids. If you do this, you’ll get very lonely very quickly and will start to go insane. Even just popping to the corner shop will give you some fresh air and the chance to speak to some real life adults. You should also go on days out, join playgroups, and arrange to meet up with friends regularly.

3. Do Something Just For You
People say that being a SAHM is a full-time job, but it really isn’t. After all, with a real job you get sick days, paid holidays, and lunch breaks, but you don't get any of these things. Despite this, it’s vital that you make time to get away from your kids and do things just for you, whether that’s dinner with a friend, a sculpting class, or shopping for bidets and faucets for a new bathroom. As long as you’re relatively relaxed and having fun, you’re on the right track.

4. Get Help When You’re Overwhelmed
Many stay at home mums think that just because they stay at home, they don’t need occasional help just like everyone else, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, if anything, you need more help than other parents, as you get shorter and fewer breaks from your kids than anyone else does. Because of this, it’s important that you learn to recognise when you’re feeling overwhelmed and reach out when you need to. This could be to a babysitter, parent, or a friend.

Being able to stay at home and take care of your kids is a wonderful experience, but it also has its challenges. If you want to reduce your stress and stay happy, then the advice above should help.
