3 Ways to Deal with Home Remodelling When You Have a Young Family

As the saying goes, home is where the heart is, and it’s in our homes that we enjoy many of our deepest and most personal life experiences. So it’s hardly surprising, and certainly not a bad thing, that we all tend to dedicate so much of our time and attention to organising our homes in such a way that they best mirror our desires and personalities.

Of course, having home extensions and modifications done, such as garage or loft conversions, or the installation of new windows and doors, is a major part of how we tend to personalise and perfect our homes.

That being said, though, what if you happen to have a young family, and kids who would normally enjoy running all over the house and playing to their heart’s content? How can you deal with the chaos that naturally arises, and keep everything in order?

Well, here are a few thoughts.

Make the most of the time you have to yourselves when the builders aren’t around

On significant building projects, the builders are likely to virtually become permanent fixtures of the house for a time. They’ll be there for extended portions of the day, likely for a significant number of days, before the project is done.

As this is, to a certain degree, an invasion of your home and of the privacy which the home usually provides, you should compensate by making the most of the time that you and your family have to yourselves when the builders aren’t around.

Play games, watch movies, use communal spaces, and just do all the things that you can’t so easily do when the home is being worked on.

Let the kids know what’s happening and when, so they don’t get in the way and aren’t caught off guard

Your children are much more likely to tolerate the chaos of the building work, and the presence of the builders, if you keep them informed about what’s actually happening, and when, so that they don’t get in the way and aren’t caught off guard.

If they are liable to wander off to the kitchen in the morning only to be surprised by stranger at work, they could easily become worried, confused, or feel that their privacy was somehow compromised.

If, on the other hand, they know what to expect — and when — things are likely to go a lot more smoothly.

Of course, also be sure to let them know about which parts of the home they shouldn’t wander into at all during the process of the building work.

If the house is very chaotic and messy, that could be a good excuse for more outings and day trips

If your home is quite chaotic and messy — as is quite likely to be the case when building work is underway — you and your family may feel that it’s not a great environment to lounge around in, at least until the work is done.

On the other hand, this can be a great excuse for you and your family to get out and about, and participate in more day trips and outings.

Take full advantage of this excuse. Go out for picnics in the park, or to visit museums, or to attend local, child-friendly concerts, shows and events.
