Help Your Home: From Top to Bottom

If you find yourself walking around your house constantly wondering why things are creaking, cracking and just falling off - then it might be time you did some serious TLC. We all know that it cost much more to replace than it does to maintain when it comes to your home, so here are a couple of things that you should be spending some time and attention on sooner rather than later.

Top

Cleaning out your gutters at regular intervals will stop a whole host of issues. If you keep them cleaned out, you won’t have to deal with clogged up pipes or replace damaged parts. Overflowing gutters can also cause serious damage on your walls and even your roof. They can, depending on the type put a strain on the roof, cause cracks, splits and even cause tiles to slip. In the winter, when the cold snap hits, clogged pipes will crack in a matter of hours due to the water expanding as it freezes. Nightmare.

You can clean your gutter out yourself, or call in an expert. If you can see you have roofing issues that you can handle head to roofingsuppliesuk.co.uk to get the bits and pieces you need to fix it.

Middle

Windows and doors will need to have their insulation replaced every once in a while. This saves money on gas or electric depending on how you heat your house - hurrah. Reseal around your windows and doors too. Because they are outward facing, they are at the mercy of the elements all the time.

Bleed your radiators. They really need some love at least once a year. If you do this around winter time, you will ensure they are running at their most efficient, it lets out any excess air buildups and means the radiators will get warmer with less power consumption. In effect meaning your rooms will warm up cheaper too!

Fix all of those leaky taps, and check the cistern too. Leaks can make up a decent sized portion of your water bill, so make sure you keep on top of that.

Check all of the locks on your windows and doors.

Bottom

It doesn't matter what type of flooring you have they will be prone to wear and tear. High traffic areas need to have their carpets checked more often for lifting or tearing. Not only do they pose a health hazard but over time there will be damage done to the floorboards underneath too.

If your carpets are in good condition, it is still a good idea to give them a deep clean, get all of that furniture into another room so that you don’t miss anything.

Remove and weeds or ivy from around the base of your outer walls. They can cause damage over time with their roots embedding into the point work and creating cracks. Ivy will also work itself into any gaps in the windows or doors - letting in the cold and unwanted insects.
